Got a question?

We strive to answer most things here, but we’re just getting started, so please let us know if you don’t see an answer to your question by emailing us.

Most of these FAQs pertain to ceramics classes, but will be expanded as we grow.

We are located just about a 15-minute-drive from Lexington, VA in Timber Ridge off of Mt. Atlas Road from Rt. 11.

When are you open?

The studio will be open for students during class hours as well as various open houses and special events.

What ages do you teach?

The studio is starting with adult classes in pottery with the hope of teaching younger humans down the road as well. The minimum age for current classes offered is 16.

What should I wear?

Clay can be messy. The lighter-colored clay bodies will wash out of most clothing. Wear comfortable clothing that you don’t mind getting a little dirty. Rings and necklaces should be removed and long hair tied back. We will provide aprons to use during classes.

How many people can attend classes or workshops?

In an effort to keep class sizes small and intimate, and due to limitations of our space, classes will be kept close to 4 students for the time being. Workshop size depends on the workshop and its needs. We ask that all attendees must be paying students.

What class level should I sign up for?

As the class sizes are kept small, for now the classes will be general and tailored to suit. As things progress, more advanced classes will be offered. A quick conversation can help us fit you into the most appropriate class. As the complexity increases, certain abilities are required so the participant doesn’t struggle and other students aren’t slowed down.

How long does it take to fire my work?

Pieces will take between 2-4 weeks from completion to glaze-fired. We will do our best to get pieces through the firing cycle as efficiently as possible and notify you in person or by email when they are completed.

What if one of my pieces breaks in the kiln?

Clay is inherently fragile at all stages of the creative process. We do our best to help you avoid disappointing accidents and we will do all we can to protect your work through the firings, but clay objects break, it is a fact of life in a clay studio for which we cannot be held responsible.

Are the glazes and finished pieces food-safe?

The finished glazes will be food-safe except when specifically noted for sculptural or decorative work. Most of the clay bodies we use will be oven, microwave, and dishwasher-safe.

Are there make-up classes?

We can work with students on a case-by-case basis. If there is an open slot in another class, the student is allowed to attend that class. But, typically, there are no make-up classes.

What if a class is canceled?

If the Workshop must cancel a class due to inclement weather or other unforeseen circumstances, the class will be added to the end of the calendar for that class. If we have to cancel a class due to weather or otherwise, we will typically let you know as soon as we know via email unless you ask us to contact you a different way.

What if I need to cancel my registration?

Workshops: This includes any of our Workshops, Date Nights, Raku Firings, and other One-Time Events. Please give as much advance notice as possible if you need to cancel! We are a small studio, and cancellations can lead to the workshop being cancelled if we cannot fill your spot in time. 7+ days prior to the workshop, we can issue a full credit or a refund with a $20 processing fee. Within 7 days of the workshop, we are happy to credit you for another workshop. Within 48 hours of the workshop time, we cannot issue a credit or refund. Credits can be used for up to 1 year from the date of purchase.

Private Workshops + Classes: 7+ days prior to the workshop, we can issue a full credit or a refund with a $40 processing fee. Within 7 days of the workshop, we are happy to reschedule to another date, issue a full credit, or issue a 75% refund with a $40 processing fee. Within 48 hours of the class/workshop time, we cannot issue a credit or refund. Credits can be used for up to one year from the date of purchase.

We reserve the right to cancel any class or workshop due to insufficient enrollment up to 5 business days prior to the scheduled start date of an offering. When a class or workshop is canceled by The Workshop, a full refund will be issued.

Is there open studio?

Currently the studio will only be available during class time.

Do you sell your pottery & other wares in the studio?

The Workshop serves primarily as the studio space for Judd & Cary; however, we want to hold classes and workshops regularly, so while we may dedicate some space in the barn to selling our creations, space will be limited. However, during our open houses several times a year, we will be selling our wares and will market those in advance, so we recommend you stay connected with us via our newsletter by signing up at the bottom of the page. We sometimes will also sell at other pop-up shops + markets, which will be listed on our home page. We also hope to eventually have some inventory for sale from this website, or possibly our individual websites.

Do you offer gift certificates?

YES! Simply email us to inquire about that option.

When will you start photography and other classes?

Cary needs a little time to acclimate to her new studio and her analog materials which have been forever changing over the years. The hope is it won’t be too long, but please be patient and stay tuned for more in the future.

What other types of classes/workshops will you teach?

We are excited to explore different disciplines at The Workshop and plan to offer classes/workshops in all kinds of art forms that could include printmaking, alternative photography, textiles, painting, drawing, collage, papermaking, jewelry-making, or mixed media. If you would be interested in teaching a class or workshop with us, we look forward to hearing from you.
